The rise and fall of Japanese feminism (part 1)
one of a series of columns of mine posted in the club wechat public account since Jan, 2022
In most recent years, the feminist movements set a fire in China and become well-known from the unknown to the public. But different groups of interests fail to share the same page while the conservatives criticize that betray the filial obligation ("be a good daughter") and are insatiably avaricious of power. On the other side of progressiveness, women's awakeness is utterly good and meaningful. Under the fierce argument and debate, the situation became extreme and the "gender war" broke out on social media. China is not an outlier in the theme of gender struggle and conflict because Japan, our neighbor who shares a similar culture encountered a massive feminist movement in the 20th century. Sadly speaking, their voices have been overshadowed by the irresistible tide of the time nowadays.
兴起
The Rise
Material determines consciousness. Before talking about feminism, it's necessary to investigate how Japanese economics recovered from WWII. When the war ended, over 90+ Japanese cities and many more industrial zones were heavily damaged. Japan turned into the frontline of anti-socialism and a tool for building the lockdown of USSR influence. However, to fulfill Japan's role in the global strategy of the US, it is a must to push economic and political reforms. Under the host of General MacArthur, Japan initialized three preliminary reforms, namely, land reform, democratization, and anti-monopoly.

US Army's food assitstance and low-texation policy ignited a postwar "baby boom" in Japan. That laid the foundation of future economic recovery because it provided Japan with numerous cheap labors. Since the outbreak of the Korean War, US capital poured in to invest the manufactory in Japan for military supplies and thus stimulate the economic recovery of Japan. In 1961, the annual GDP growth of Japan was over 12%. In 1964, Japan host the Olympics Game and announced a economic miracle to the world. In 1968, with the adultification of postwar "baby boom", Japan took the place of Federal Germany as the world's second economy.
Speaking of feminism, when people's living is no longer a problem, their mindset would follow up. Feminist movements rarely broke out in third-world nations because women don't have financial freedom. Once they earned liberation in the family economy, why should they continue to tie themselves in the traditional positions? Japan's new generation of women started to deny feudal orders and habits where men always enjoyed an advantageous social status. That sounded the bugle of feminist movements, uprising.
