Fight Against Poverty

At Nong Teng Village of Da Hua Yao Minority Autonomous County in Guangxi Province, a remote area in southwest China, I witnessed another type of poverty, different from the concept taught on textbook.

In the summer of 2022, when the cases of pandemic resurgeed everywhere in China, our bus was carrying me and other 5 team members on a rugged mountain road from Nanning Airport to Da Hua county. It took us 8 hours on the way, made up by cement and gravel roads.

Since day one, after getting off the bus, I started working. As the director of media, communication and outreach, I had to collect as many materials as possible that reveals the problem they were encountering and raises social awareness through social media and website. The first challenge was to shorthand county magistrate's meeting with us at a tasty restaurant run by himself. He talked about the local population, culture, economic development, education, the achievement of government poverty support, etc.

Definitely, I stayed awake till the small hours that night.

Population: 365000

GDP: 7.5 billion Yuan (RMB)

(the GDP of the most developed county in Guangxi is 32.8 billion Yuan)

Yao minority in the population: 20%

Industries: Crop Production (corn, fruit, sugarcane), Breading (pig, goat, fowl), Food Processing, Mining, Electricity Generation, Tourism

At Nong Teng Village, we harvested and carried cron from the farm to processing workshop.

Also, we fed pigs and the smell almost made me lose consciousness, lol.

The second challenging was to make videos and posters to help promote local products in social media and e-commerce live broadcasting.

Interviewing local residents is the third and always most challenging and interesting task——You can never anticipate their answers and stories :)

Most of the left-behind are elders and children while the young labors are making their living in big cities.

What they want

The village head and president of the school graciously declined my proposal to donate some clothes and books to the elementary students.

"You see, we are not in the lack of hardware, smart phones, computers, TikTok, and youngsters have abundant paths to know outside world. But we need qualified teachers urgently to share my pressure. You know, it's not an easy piece for the president to teach 4 subjects to all graders at the same time."
